How Water Gets To Your Well

The earth's water cycle is the continuous circulation of moisture on the planet. The sun's rays warm the earth, evaporating the ground water, causing it to rise and form clouds. In time, the moisture in the cloud condenses and the precipitation falls back to earth as rain, hail, sleet or snow.

When rain begins to fall from the clouds, it is almost in a completely pure state. As it continues toward the earth, it cleanses the air by picking up impurities such as dust, dirt, soot, gases etc. Rain rarely hits the earth without picking up impurities. After it hits the earth it begins to cleanse the groud of impurities as well. If the rain hasn't been immediately evaporated or collected by surface bodies such as lakes and ponds, it will probably penetrate the soil and what ever is not absorbed by plant roots will head downward and form ground water resevoirs that may be tapped by wells. Ground water is the main source of well water.

Water is known as the "universal solvent" because it has a tendency to dissolve everything it comes in contact with. Water falling through the air and being held in the soil absorbs carbon dioxide and forms carbonic acid. The increases the solvency power of the water. As it travels through the ground, it dissolves minerals and other impurities until it reaches your well. Have you ever noticed the ice formations in the rocks as you are getting off the highway in the winter? This is ground water traveling towards your well!
