Things to Do Before You Begin Repairing a Faucet

  • Turn off the water supply to the faucet. For bathroom and kitchen faucets, you’ll find the shutoff valves under the sink. For bathtubs and showers, the shutoff usually is located behind an access panel on the wall behind the fixture; if you have a basement or crawl space under the bathroom, the shutoff valves may be below the fixture. If the supply valve won’t stop the water flow or you don’t have shutoff valves, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve on your home’s plumbing system.
  • Open the faucet to drain all water out.
  • Stuff a rag in the drain of the vanity, sink or shower to prevent small faucet parts from falling down the drain.
  • Cover the sink and surrounding countertop area(or floor in shower) with a towel or dropcloth to prevent damage from tools that slip or fall.
